A Corroboration Of The Bible Record By A Babylonian Document Found Near Bagdad:
A two-inch-wide clay tablet was unearthed in the 1870’s near modern-day Bagdad, Iraq. In 2007, Michael Jursa, a professor at the University of Vienna, in Austria, came across the tablet while doing research at the British Museum.
On this tablet, Jursa recognized the name Nebo-sarsechim (Nabu-sharrussu-ukin, in its Babylonian form), A Babylonian official mentioned in the Bible at Jeremiah 39:3, “that all the princes of the king of Babylon came in, and sat in the middle gate, to wit, Nergal–sharezer, Samgar–nebo, Sarsechim, Rab–saris, Nergal–sharezer, Rab–mag, with all the rest of the princes of the king of Babylon.” (American Standard Version; ASV). [[note: At Jeremiah 39:3, the New World Translation; (NWT), reads: “Samgar-nebo, Sarsechim, Rabsaris.” Following the punctuation in the Hebrew Masoretic text. But the Hebrew consonantal text could be rendered: “Samgar, Nebo-sarsechim the Rabsaris – or, the Chief Court Official – which agrees with the cuneiform tablet.]]
Nebo-sarsechim was one of King Nebuchadnezzar”s commanders at the destruction of Jerusalem in 607 BV, and according to the tablet, he is called “the chief eunuch.” Morevoer, the title chief eunuch was held by only one man at any given time, providing strong evidence that the Sarsechim in question is the same man mentioned in the Bible.
The tablet records a gold delivery that Nebo-sarsechim made to the temple of Marduk, or Merodach, the chief god of Babylon, whose name is also mentioned in the Bible at Jeremiah 50:2, “Declare ye among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and conceal not: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed; her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.” (ASV). The receipt is dated the 10th year, 11th month, and the 18th day of Nebuchadnezzar’s reign. The gold delivery, however, had nothing to do with the sacking of Jerusalem, which occurred years later. This per 2 Kings 25:8-10, “Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem. 9 And he burnt the house of Jehovah, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great house, burnt he with fire. 10 And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.” (ASV), and 2 Kings 25:13-15, “And the pillars of brass that were in the house of Jehovah, and the bases and the brazen sea that were in the house of Jehovah, did the Chaldeans break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon. 14 And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the sthingys, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away. 15 And the firepans, and the basins, that which was of gold, in gold, and that which was of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away.” (ASV). However, the finding of something like this tablet, where we see a person mentioned in the Bible making an everyday payment to the temple in Babylon and quoting the exact date, is quite extraordinary per Professor Jursa. It is acclaimed as one of the most significant discoveries in modern Biblical archaeology – a tablet that actually supports the view that the historical books of the Old Testament are based on solid fact per the Telegraph Newspaper of Britain.
The Bible’s veracity, however, does not depend on archaeology. Far more powerful evidence can be found within the Bible itself, and this, especially in Biblical prophecies such as 2 Peter 1:21, “For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.” (ASV). For example, more than 100 years in advance, Almighty God (YHWH), speaking through the prophet Isaiah, foretold that all the treasures in Jerusalem would be taken to Babylon at Isaiah 39:6-7, “Behold, the days are coming, when all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith Jehovah. 7 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, whom thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” (ASV). Likewise, through the prophet Jeremiah, Almighty God (YHWH), foretold at Jeremiah 20:4-5, “For thus saith Jehovah, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself, and to all thy friends; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall carry them captive to Babylon, and shall slay them with the sword. 5 Moreover I will give all the riches of this city, and all the gains thereof, and all the precious things thereof, yea, all the treasures of the kings of Judah will I give into the hand of their enemies; and they shall make them a prey, and take them, and carry them to Babylon.” (ASV).
Nebu-sarsechim was one of those enemies, and as such, he was also an eyewitness fo the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. In fact, whether he knew it or not, he actually shared in that fulfillment. [reference source – Awake, May 2009, page 11].
