More than a year after their story first made waves, a blind woman and her hefty four-legged companion are back in the news following her enrollment at Michigan State University. AFP paints the picture:

Mona Ramouni was taking notes with a Braille device when her guide pony Cali joined the class discussion with a sudden snort.

"What do you think, Cali?" professor Shelley Smithson said with a laugh, and then steered the conversation back to theories of counseling and psychotherapy.

Cali is just one of a handful of miniature horses in the United States known to be used as guide animals for the blind and is likely the first pony to attend college.

Before obtaining the horse, Ramouni had no service animal because her devout Muslim family considers dogs to be unclean and would not allow one at home. Photos of Cali exiting a vehicle, idling in class, and quenching her thirst at a public sink can be viewed here.

Is this another case of a Muslim enjoying special accommodations unavailable to non-Muslims? Not exactly. Neither the Guide Horse Foundation (GHF) nor a New York Times Magazine piece gives any indication that the emergence of these animals, which are both controversial and rare, has been driven by Islamic concerns. Indeed, the GHF website lists only nonreligious arguments in support of guide horses, while none of the people featured there appears to be Muslim.

Also of note: such animals have legal standing. Updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act declare that "a public entity shall make reasonable modifications in policies, practices, or procedures to permit the use of a miniature horse by an individual with a disability."

Though guide horses and their acceptance in public places are not Islam-specific innovations, the above story nevertheless does bring to mind the matter of reciprocity regarding Muslims in the West. One cannot hear the tale of Ramouni and Cali without recalling the countless examples of people with guide dogs being turned away, on both sides of the Atlantic, by Muslim-staffed restaurants, Muslim taxi drivers, Muslim bus drivers, and non-Muslim bus drivers placating irate Muslim passengers. Furthermore, who could forget Tyler Hurd, a man suffering from seizures who, like Ramouni, only wanted to attend school? Two years ago, his Muslim classmate at St. Cloud State in Minnesota threatened to kill his service dog, forcing Hurd to leave the course.

If American society is so responsive to different needs and lifestyles that it even enables the use of a small horse by a Muslim who objects to canines on religious grounds, is it too much to ask — nay, demand — that all Muslims respect the rights of non-Muslims employing service dogs, whether in taxis, restaurants, or anywhere else? More generally, is it not time for Muslims in the West, starting with their self-appointed representatives, to understand that accommodation is a two-way street requiring some give to balance the take?

Allah's Messenger said: Gabriel had promised me that he would meet me tonight, but he did not meet me. By Allah, he never broke his promises, and Allah's Messenger spent the day in this sad mood. Then it occurred to him that there had been a puppy under their cot. He commanded and it was turned out. He then took some water in his hand and sprinkled it at that place. When it was evening Gabriel met him and he said to him: You promised me that you would meet me the previous night. He said: Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. Then on that very morning he commanded the killing of the dogs until he announced that the dog kept for the orchards should also be killed, but he spared the dog meant for the protection of extensive fields or big gardens.

COMMENT

These Hadith tell the story of Muhammad's order to kill dogs. Muhammad said he would like to have all dogs killed because a puppy dog stopped Gabriel from visiting him. So, the easiest way to deal with the hindrance was to have all the dogs killed. He first said he wanted all dogs killed, but then he made exceptions for dogs that are used for farming, hunting, or watching. But notice, dogs used for use in an orchard had to be killed. Further, why did he order that all black dogs be killed? Why did he think that they were more evil? He even called them "a Satan". This is another of his superstitious beliefs. "Black" dogs are not inherently more evil than other colored dogs. And, strangely enough on the other hand, Muhammad taught that Allah's favorite color for people's clothes was white! (Ibn Sa'd). [Is this racism?]

Vol. 3, #299 - Narrated 'Aun bin Abu Juhaifa: "My father bought a slave who practiced the profession of cupping. (My father broke the slave's instruments of cupping). I asked my father why he had done so. He replied, "The Prophet forbade the acceptance of the price of a dog or blood, and also forbade the profession of tattooing, getting tattooed and receiving or giving Riba, (usury), and cursed the picture-makers."

Vol. 3, #482 - Narrated Abu Mas'ud Al-Ansari: "Allah's Apostle regarded illegal the price of a dog, the earnings of a prostitute, and the charges taken by a soothsayer."

COMMENT

Here we see that money made from the sale of a dog (for other than already mentioned purposes) was considered as evil as the money made from prostitution, witchcraft, or usury. What superstitious belief led Muhammad to believe that the sale of a dog belongs on the same moral level as prostitution and witchcraft?

Abu Huraira (in another narration) said from the Prophet, "unless it is used for guarding sheep or farms, or for hunting." Narrated Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "A dog for guarding cattle or for hunting.""

Vol. 7, #390 - Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: "I heard the Prophet saying, "If someone keeps a dog neither for hunting, nor for guarding livestock, the reward (for his good deeds) will be reduced by two Qirats per day.""

COMMENT
Here we see that having a dog as a pet is prohibited in Islam. In fact, if a Muslim keeps a dog as a pet, or for any other reason besides farming, hunting, or watching, God will take away some reward for his good deeds!

I quote, "The companionship of a dog can contribute to a person's general well-being. Scientific studies have shown that petting a dog slows the heart rate and lowers the blood pressure of the person who is doing the petting. Dogs assist disabled people in many ways. For example, they guide the blind and serve as ears for the deaf. In addition, dogs lift the spirits of patients in hospitals and nursing homes." - Page 262, under "Dogs".

More information on the benefit of dogs is found from the Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation. They use "pet therapy" to help patients recover and rehabilitate.

They state:

"But many studies have shown that pets can also:

* Increase communication and laughter

* Lower blood pressure

* Promote relaxation

* "De-institutionalize" a facility and make it more "homelike"

* Rekindle pleasant memories from childhood

* Lift mood and increase socialization

* Decrease anxiety and stre


Surely dogs benefit mankind in more ways than hunting, watching, and herding. Why would Muhammad forbid their ownership? Where was Allah in all of this?[/b]

I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qibla. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away, for I disliked to face him.""



COMMENT-
Here is more superstition on Muhammad's part. Why should a dog nullify prayer? Why should God care about the position of a dog? Doesn't God judge the heart? What if the dog cannot be seen? It could be in a ravine. Are the prayers made null and void? What if the dog is over the horizon? What kind of a bizarre "god" does this really portray?

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: Angels do not accompany the travelers who have with them a dog and a bell.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger as saying: "The bell is the musical instrument of Satan."

COMMENT
Here we see that a little dog is able to stop an angel from entering a house! Think about it. And why can't the angels accompany a person with a dog with a bell? What about a skunk, or a pig, or a vulture? Or what about a dog with a tambourine?

OTHER SOURCESThe Shorter Ency. of Islam also describes Muhammad's strange viewpoint of dogs. Under Kalb (Arabic for dog), on page 215, it says,

"The dog, is also in Islam one of the "unclean beasts", primarily because it's flesh may not be eaten and further because, according to the Hadith, there are several special regulations regarding it. For example dogs render food which they lick impure and render unavailable water intended for ritual purification.

Vessels, likewise, which have been licked by dogs, require to be cleaned several times, including once with sand. In a certain way they render impure the whole room in which they are; for angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog and Muhammad had first to sprinkle the place on which a young dog had lain concealed with purificatory water before Gabriel would appear to him.

A Bangladeshi woman who was publicly caned for an alleged extramarital affair with her stepson has died, and police have arrested two people, according to media reports.

Sufia Begum, 50, was sentenced by an Islamic court in her village in the northwest Rajshahi district, police told Agence France-Presse, and was whipped 40 times on Nov. 12.

"She became seriously ill and was hospitalized after the caning, and she died last week," police chief Azizul Haq Sarker told AFP.

A Muslim cleric and the woman who carried out the beating were arrested, AFP reported. The BBC said authorities are looking for four more people.

"Village elders tied 10 canes together and beat her legs," Sarker said, according to AFP.

Begum was hospitalized in Rajshahi with severe injuries a week after the beating, the BBC said, noting that it's unclear why it took so long for her to get treatment. Doctors had recommended that she seek treatment in the capital, Dhaka, because her injuries were so serious.

But she died as her family struggled to raise money for the effort. Her kidneys were badly damaged, her brother, Taimur Rahman, told the Herald Sun of Australia.

"Her body was swollen, and I couldn't even recognize her," he told the BBC.

The BBC said it has not yet been determined that Begum died from caning-related injuries.

Bangladesh outlawed punishments in the name of religious edicts earlier this year, media reports said. But advocacy groups say it's common for women to be whipped or caned for offenses like adultery despite the ban, AFP said.

The death of Begum, who the BBC said was in her 40s, was thought to be the first since the punishments were outlawed.

Iranian cleric denounces dog owners


Hardline conservatives are still influential in Iran

A conservative Iranian cleric has denounced the "moral depravity" of owning a dog, and called for the arrest of all dogs and their owners.
Dogs are considered unclean in Islamic law and the spread of dog ownership in Westernised secular circles in Iran is frowned upon by the religious establishment.

"I demand the judiciary arrest all dogs with long, medium or short legs - together with their long-legged owners," Hojatolislam Hassani is quoted as saying in the reformist Etemad newspaper.

"Otherwise I'll do it myself," said the outspoken cleric, who leads Friday prayers in the north-western city of Urumiyeh.

"In our country there is freedom of speech, but not freedom for corruption," he said.

Canine clampdown



Tehran journalist Mafiseh Kouhnavand told the BBC that the subject of dog ownership had been brought up many times before.

Hardline judiciary agents and police occasionally clamp down on the practice, fining owners and confiscating their pets from streets and parks.

Short-legged dogs were the target of a previous campaign

In June, police banned the sale of dogs and penalised anyone walking a dog in public. The practice is seen by conservatives as a corrupting influence of decadent Western culture.

But despite the clampdowns, dog ownership has been on the rise, especially among rich Iranians in the north of Tehran.

"Now it has reached Urumiyeh, but some people were not ready for it," Ms Kouhnavand said.

Hojatolislam Hassani appears to be widening the scope of his anti-canine campaign.

Last year, he publicly thanked police for their policy of exclusively confiscating short-legged dogs in Urumiyeh.

DASHTI QALA - Reports have been confirmed that the northern Afghanistan town of Taleqan was forced to witness a gruesome display sponsored by the ruling Taliban government 10 days ago.
Citizens were forced into the main square, where the Taliban forces began parading three dogs, each with its head shaved and stenciled with the names of the men the movement most despises: Burhunnadin Rabbani, the ousted Afghan president, Zahir Shah, the exiled king, and George W. Bush, President of the United States.

The dogs were then doused with gasoline and set on fire. According to The Daily Telegraph and National Post, the story was confirmed by three witnesses who had escaped the scene and found refuge in a camp of the Northern Alliance, the Taliban's internal opposition.

The media at the time, I recall, very clearly attacked the British and the Westerners. You would see pictures of dogs, pit bulls, just like that, in the middle of the newspaper. It [would have] nothing but just a caption saying: "This is the English. How ugly the English are, like this dog." And dogs in Saudi Arabia and in Islam, generally, are an icon of uncleanliness. LONDON (Reuters) – Nine men arrested in British police raids a week ago appeared in court on Monday to face charges of conspiracy to cause explosions and preparing acts of terrorism.

The nine were among 12 men seized on December 20 in what police said were counter-terrorism raids essential to protect the public from the threat of attack. Three of the 12 were later released without charge.

The nine remaining suspects appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday and were remanded in custody to appear at London's Old Bailey court on January 14, the Press Association news agency said.

"I have today advised the police that nine men should be charged with conspiracy to cause explosions and with engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism with the intention of either committing acts of terrorism, or assisting another to commit such acts," Sue Hemming, head of the Crown Prosecution Service Counter Terrorism Division, said in a statement.

MILITANTS' SHADOW

The suspects were from London, the Welsh capital of Cardiff and the central English city of Stoke. At the time of the arrests, the BBC reported that most of them were British but they also included a small number of Bangladeshis.

A police statement said that between October 1 and November 20 they conspired to cause "explosions of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious injury to property."

It added that between October and December 20, when the men were arrested, they had been downloading material from the Internet, researching and discussing potential targets, carrying out reconnaissance and "igniting and testing incendiary material."

It did not specify what the potential targets were.

The BBC said in an unsourced report at the time of the arrests that they were linked to an investigation into al Qaeda-inspired attacks within Britain. The inquiry was led by the MI5 domestic security agency and the suspected plot was in its early stages, it said. Police declined to comment.

Earlier this month, a man apparently radicalized in Britain blew himself up in a botched attack in Sweden, reviving criticism of Britain's record in tackling the threat from violent militants.

Muslims are free not to eat pork products, but must they be protected from hearing about them? Yes, according to one high school student in Spain who was distressed by a geography lesson:

The teacher was lecturing normally on the different climates of the planet and used the Granada town of Trevélez as an example of a cold, dry climate. As an anecdote, the teacher recounted that just such a climate was conducive to the curing of hams. Then the student asked the teacher not to speak of hams since the subject offended him as a Muslim.

In a bizarre video, the student explains how talk of ham so traumatized him that he cannot get out of bed. He also accuses the teacher of telling him to leave Spain, which the educator denies. The family went so far as to lodge a complaint with police, but a clear-minded prosecutor quickly shelved it. "There is not even the minimal indication of any type of crime," he said, describing the teen's attitude as "abusive, sectarian, capricious, and inadmissible."

Regardless, one can add ham to the list of topics known to upset some Muslims in Western classrooms, sparking demands either to change the syllabus or to exempt adherents of Islam from certain academic requirements. Among the subjects causing strife through mere discussion:

The Holocaust. Muslim resistance has led to capitulations. In the Netherlands, "a fifth of history teachers in the four major Dutch cities have had to deal with not being able to or rarely bringing up the Holocaust because Muslim students in particular have difficulties with it." In Germany, "out of fear of the students' reactions, many of the teachers avoid teaching this chapter of history." Similar claims have emerged from the UK.

Mideast history. A new study has found that teachers in French public schools face pressure from students and parents who object to lessons on France's war in Algeria, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and U.S. military campaigns in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Evolution. While Darwin inspires objections in French classrooms, British teachers have been accused of "bending over backwards" to placate Muslim pupils.

Select medical topics. A 2007 article reports that in the UK, "some Muslim medical students are refusing to attend lectures or answer exam questions on alcohol-related or sexually transmitted diseases because they claim it offends their religious beliefs."

Of course, these problems are only compounded in "un-Islamic" classes such as music and swimming, which move beyond discourse and mandate the active participation of students.

The prescription? Enforce equal rights and responsibilities for all, but grant no group special privileges. José Reyes Fernández, the Spanish boy's teacher, puts it this way: if "there are 30 students … one of them must adapt to the 29 others, and not the 29 others to the one."

Indeed, the area where the Arabophones seem most adept at innovation would be terrorism. Airplane hijackings, suicide bombings, and mega-terrorism are among their claims to originality.

And now comes the wave of suicide bombers. Note the news from Iraq, "3 suicide bombers used to kill tenacious Iraqi cop," concerning the assassination of police commander Lt. Col. Shamil al-Jabouri by al-Qaida:

As al-Jabouri slept Wednesday morning on a couch in his office, three men wearing police uniforms over vests laden with explosives slipped through an opening in the blast walls surrounding the compound where his building stood, police said.

Police manning one of at least four observation towers surrounding the compound shot one of the attackers in a yard and his vest exploded. Under the cover of that blast, police said, the other two suicide bombers charged about 100 yards (90 meters) and made it into al-Jabouri's single-story building.

They detonated their vests simultaneously - one at the door of al-Jabouri's office - killing the commander instantly and injuring a policeman sleeping in a trailer nearby. The two blasts brought the whole building down, burying the slain commander under the rubble, police said.

Comment: The effectiveness of this cruel new tactic makes it likely to be repeated, and not just in Arabic-speaking countries, either. (December 29, 2010)
